Could a Different Approach in Math
Help Your Child Master This All-Important Subject?
Paul Ziegler explains how Systematic Mathematics:
1.  Systematically builds an understanding of the foundations
of our base-ten number system and how it works.
2.  Then applies that understanding to the solving of problems.

Greetings,

Your family can come to a deeper understanding of who God
is and what He has done by studying God's Word together at this
Thanksgiving time -- resulting in praise and thankfulness to our
wonderful Lord for His goodness to us.

We interrupt our series on creativity to bring you two
Thanksgiving issues to help you teach your children about
thankfulness from God's Word (this issue) and how to help them
develop the character quality of thankfulness (next issue).

May the Lord bless you and your family for His glory.

Cordially,

From a Reader:
Our church held a dedication of the boxes filled for Operation
Christmas Child this Sunday.
The children went on stage, each holding a box.  Our Pastor
and the congregation prayed over the boxes -- that each box would
be a special blessing for the child who received it.  They also
prayed for all the children in need this Christmas.
What a inspiring and practical lesson this was for our children to
learn about giving and ministering to those in need in Jesus' name!

Praising God for Who He Is

Praising God

1.  Memorize Psalm 100:1, 2.

"Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.
     Serve the Lord with gladness:
Come before his presence with singing."

2.  Talk about what praise is and how we praise God.

 •  Point out the difference between:
Praising God for Who He is and
Thanking Him for what He's done.

3.  List things to praise God for and do so together.

4.  Read Psalm 19:1-6.

 •  How does the earth and all creation praise God?

 •  Write a poem or paint a picture of nature praising God.

Who God Is

1.  Memorize Psalm 100:3.

"Know ye that the Lord he is God:
          It is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves;
We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture."

2.  What is God like?

 •  In addition to God being holy, loving, just, and true, older
children can learn the meaning and implications of terms
such as omnipotent, omniscience, omnipresent, and immutable.

 •  Write a character description of God based on Scripture.

 •  Praise Him together for Who He is!

3.  Read Psalm 139.

 •  Did God make each of us individually?

 •  Who knows us, our character, our thoughts better than anyone
else?  What does this mean to you?

4.  Psalm 100:3 tells us that we are God's flock.

 •  Psalm 23 gives us a picture of what it means to have God as
     our Shepherd.

 •  Read Psalm 23 and think of how this description makes you
     feel (e.g., secure, cherished).

 •  List things to praise God for from Psalm 23.

Thanking God for What He Has Done

Thanking God

1.  Memorize Psalm 100:4.

"Enter into his gates with thanksgiving,
and into his courts with praise:
Be thankful unto him, and bless his name."

2.  What are some things we can thank God for?

 •  Make a list or do one of the following.

 •  Write things for which you are thankful on cut-out paper
leaves and attach to a large sheet of paper with a tree
     drawn on it.

 •  Write things for which you are thankful on pieces of paper
cut in shapes of leaves, fruits, or vegetables and place in
     basket or box.

 •  Thank God together, using your list.

 •  Keep adding to your list and thanking God all year long!

3.  Have your children close their eyes and imagine the courts
of the Lord while you read Revelation 4:1-6.

 •  Discuss what it would be like to enter heaven's gates and
     come into God's courts.

 •  Why would you do it with praise and thanksgiving?

4.  List some of the names of the Lord  (e.g., Jehovah Jireh -
     The God Who Provides).

 •  What names would you give God, based on your personal or
family relationship with Him?  (e.g., The God Who Gave Daddy
     a Job).

 •  How do we "bless His name"?

What God Has Done

1.  Memorize Psalm 100:5.

     "For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting;
and his truth endureth to all generations."

2.  What is lovingkindness?

 •  Read Psalm 136 and using it as an example, write a family
Psalm telling about God's lovingkindness to your family.

3.  What is faithfulness?

 •  Read Lamentations 3:22, 23.

 •  Sing "Great Is Thy Faithfulness."

 •  How has God been faithful to you?

 •  Thank God for these specific examples of His faithfulness.

 •  Write one or more verses to the above tune praising and
thanking God for what He has been and done for your family.

4.  Recite all of Psalm 100.

 •  Review the things you have considered and discussed.

 •  Do all of these things make you want to "serve the Lord with
     gladness"?

 •  What other responses are called for in Psalm 100?

 •  Give specific examples of how we do each of these things and
make plans as a family to follow up on them.

Practical Ways To Thank God

What To Thank God for

1.  For His Provision

"And my God will supply all your needs according to His
riches in glory in Christ Jesus"  (Philippians 4:19).

2.  For His Free Offer of Salvation

"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is
eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23).

3.  For All Good Things

"Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from
above, coming down from the Father" (James 1:17).

You can rightfully thank God for anything and everything
good, including a found parking space, safety during a near
accident that you avoided, good news from a friend, or the beauty
of the day.

4.  For Unasked-for Blessings

"For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep" (Psalms
127:2).

"He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and
sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous" (Matthew 5:45).

We can thank the Lord for those things we have received from
God without specifically asking for them.

How To Thank God

1.  Private Prayer

Talking to God in prayer throughout the day is how we can
"pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17).  And the majority
of our words to Him should be thanks to Him for Who He is (His
attributes) and what He has done for us.

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and
supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to
God" (Philippians 4:6).

"Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an
attitude of thanksgiving" (Colossians 4:2).

2.  Modeling Private, Constant Prayer

Since your children cannot know your constant and silent
prayers to the Lord, you may want to occasionally say them out
loud in their presence, such as "Thank you, Lord, that we have
the freedom to home school and had such an interesting history
lesson today."

3.  Family Prayers

During your family prayer time, ask your children to think
of one specific thing that happened that day (especially to them
individually) for which they can thank the Lord.

4.  Singing Hymns and Spiritual Songs

Throughout Scripture, thankfulness to the Lord is expressed
not only in words, but through music.

"I will praise the name of God with song and magnify Him
with thanksgiving" (Psalms 69:30).

"Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all
wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and
hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your
hearts to God" (Colossians 3:16).

Learn (memorize) and sing hymns and songs of praise.  Sing
praises:
 •  Alone, either aloud or silently in your mind as you work or
     travel.
 •  As a family, at meals, devotional times, and in the car.
 •  Corporately, as a church congregation, choir, or ensemble.
 •  For others, such as at a rest home or rescue mission.

Practical Ways To Praise God

1.  Tell Others.

"In the midst of the assembly I will praise You" (Psalms
22:22).

     "I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to You among the nations" (Psalms 57:9).

Part of our giving thanks to God is to do it before others
as a testimony of His goodness to all mankind and our
appreciation of Him.

2.  Direct the Praise to God.

"Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory
because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth" (Psalms
115:1).

Teach your children by your own example that when we are
praised by others, we should acknowledge the Lord's grace that
enables us.  In this way we give the glory and praise to Him.

Interesting Online Information
about America's Thanksgiving Day

The Origin of America's Annual Thanksgiving Day
"The grateful Pilgrims then declared a three-day feast,
starting on December 13, 1621, to thank God and to celebrate
with their Indian friends. While this was not the first Thanksgiving
in America (thanksgiving services were held in Virginia as early
as 1607), it was America's first Thanksgiving Festival."  Read

Thanksgiving in America by David Barton
"The tradition of Thanksgiving as a time to focus on God and
His blessings dates back almost four centuries in America. While
such celebrations occurred at Cape Henry Virginia as early as
1607, it is from the Pilgrims that we derive the current tradition
of Thanksgiving."  Read more at:
